Before the coffee gets cold

Before the coffee gets cold

By Toshikazu Kawaguchi

"Before the coffee gets cold", a set of 4 intertwined and overlapped stories in a coffee shop offer its customers a unique time travel experience.

The premise of the novel is a basement café in Tokyo called Funiculi Funicula which allows people to travel through time under certain conditions:

1. Only those you can meet are those who have visited the coffee shop. 2. There is nothing you can do to change your present. 3. There is a time limit. 4. Only one visit is allowed.

The concept is interesting and the stories deal with loss, grief and regret afterwards.

The first story, 'The Lovers' features a young businesswoman driven by her career, Fumiko, who wishes she had told her boyfriend how she really felt after he announced his move to work.

The second story, "Husband and Wife," tells the story of a woman who developed Alzheimer's disease for her husband early on.

The third story, "Sister" is about giving a woman the opportunity to see her sister again for the last time.

The last story, "Mother and Child", tells of the café owner, his wife and their unborn child, and links it to a previous story to offer a glimpse into their future.

A slow-motion novel about time travel that is thought provoking and highly emotional. He talks about the guilt we live because of all the words not said or the deed not done for the missing people. He also maintains that it should not be a deterrent to living a happy life. We must all come to terms with our past and move on.
